Frequently Asked Questions
What are JET. Designs’ jewellery metals made of?
JET. Designs carries a full line of base metal jewellery that are nickel and lead safe. The base metal is composed of non-precious metal such as copper or brass and then is plated with another metal. Rhodium and silvertone plating provides a surface that will tarnish slowly if cared for and gives a bright, reflective appearance. Surgical steel is made to the same standards as medical implants and is hypo-allergenic. Gunmetal findings have a dark steely grey finish that has a sophisticated look that can go from day to night. The base material used for gunmetal findings is usually copper. Other base-metals utilized in JET. Designs’ jewellery also have an “antique finish“ such as antique copper and antique gold. They have a special oxidized finish that adds a dark embellishment. These antiqued effects are quite permanent. Most of the copper plated findings have a brass base. The antique gold metal has a copper base. They both have a non-tarnish coating, and do not turn green. Sterling Silver jewellery has a traditional silver alloy used in jewellery, and is often Hallmarked "92.5".
What is the artistic wire made of?
All of the artistic wire has a copper core and then is plated with a permanent colour or a silver plated colour metal with the exception of the brass artistic wire. Many of JET. Designs’ jewellery incorporates a non tarnish silver artistic wire which has a copper base that is covered with silver plating and is then layered with a clear polyurethane coating. The polyurethane coating protects the silver from oxygen and prevents it from tarnishing.
How do I care for JET. Designs' jewellery?
- When wearing JET. Designs’ jewellery, try to avoid direct contact with water and fragrances. If your jewellery gets wet, dry instantly with a soft cloth.
- To clean jewellery, use a soft dry cloth and gently polish. (Avoid using jewellery cleaner and solvents to clean jewellery. These cleaners can be abrasive and could remove the plating off metals) Gently polish metal with a soft cloth to restore the colour and luster.
- Store jewellery separately in a soft pouch, zip lock bag, or box to protect jewellery and avoid moisture. Moisture can harm the surface of the jewellery and may cause it to tarnish or become pitted.
- Jewellery made with nylon coated wire is delicate and should be handled with care. Avoid bending nylon coated wire in order to maintain its original shape.
